Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Remigius, High Road (A1066), Roydon.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate nineteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a further three men who died in World War Two. It is described as 3.2m tall “on a four-sided shaft with slightly chamfered edges and moulded foot, atop a tapering four-sided plinth and two-stepped base” (S1). There is an inscription on one face the plinth in incised lettering, painted black (S4).

Constructed/Sculpted By: Cooley and Son, stonemasons of Diss.
Cost: £35.
Unveiled: 03 October 1920 (dedicated by the Rector, the Reverend H.C. Frere). A secondary unveiling took place after World War Two on 05 September 1948 (by R.S. Copeman (Chairman of the Parish Council), and rededicated by the Rector, the Reverend W.R.J. Higgitt).
Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS/ AND IN WORLD WAR II/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
