Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920, to commemorate eighteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly six men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: A1122, Salters Lode.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eighteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly six men who died in World War Two. It is described as “with Sword of Sacrifice to the face, on a plinth with a two-stepped base” and “enclosed by metal railings with gold-painted finials at the corners” (S1). There are inscriptions in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the shaft face, with eighteen associated names listed in two columns on the face of the plinth below. The latter World War Two dates (Inscription B) is to the upper step, along with six associated names listed in two columns below (S4).
