Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Bell Lane (East Side), Salhouse.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding, elaborately carved, Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate nineteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly five local servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described as “embellished with the relief carvings of the head of Christ and a cross at its centre. Each arm has a symbolic image carved on to it, presumed to be of a rose, an iris, a vine and a passion flower, and at the top there is a small, ridged canopy. The shaft has a further three panels of relief carving, each being a different style of Celtic knot-work” (S1). This cross shaft is mounted on a trapezoidal plinth which has a moulded cap and is sited on a two-stepped base. There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering (S4). The former World War One dedication begins to the south face of the moulded cap (Inscription A) and continues below to the body of the plinth, with nineteen associated names, along with rank, in two columns (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dates are to the north-east face, with five associated names along with rank (Inscription C) (S4). The whole monument has a concrete foundation.
