Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from Portland stone in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross approximately 3m tall. This memorial was erected in the autumn of 1920. It is used to commemorate twelve members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: The churchyard, Church of St Peter and St Paul, Dereham Road, Scarning.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross, approximately 3m tall. It is used to commemorate twelve members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described as having “interlace carving and decorated hemispherical bosses ornamenting the cross-head. The cross rises from a small tapering pedestal that stands on a three-stepped base, square on plan” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised, painted lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) starts to the front [east] face of the pedestal, with twelve associated names to the cross shaft above. The dates (inscription B) are recorded on the front face of the top step, and the dedication ends (Inscription C) on the front face of the middle step. The latter World War Two dedication and two associated names (Inscription D) is to the south face of the pedestal, with the dates (Inscription E) recorded on the face of step below.

Inscription D: ALSO IN MEMORY OF/ (2 NAMES).
