Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Latin cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Triangular Green at Junction of The Fairstead, Scottow.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Latin cross. It is used to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is on a four-tiered plinth, and was originally surrounded by iron railings, described as “damaged in August 1922, allegedly by a local labourer. They had consisted of four low corner posts connected by bars” (S1). There are inscriptions and names on the plinth in incised, black lettering (S5). The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) starts to the front face of the top tier of the plinth, with ten associated names on the front face of the tier below. The dedication ends (Inscription B) on the front face of the third tier down. The latter World War Two dates (Inscription C) is to the side face of the top tier, along with three associated names on the side face of the tier below.
