E. McDonald (HES), 21 May 2020 and P. Watkins (HES), 1 March 2021.
The coins recovered between 2017 and 2020 were all struck between c. 2 BC and AD 4, with the lack of any coins of Tiberius implying the hoard was probably assembled in the first two decades of the 1st century AD - well before the Roman invasion of AD 43. The proximity of the hoard to a circular cropmark and slight earthwork that may represent the remains of a Bronze Age barrow (NHER 45138) is potentially significant - suggesting the site was potentially chosen due to the visibility of earlier monument.
August 2021 and January 2022. Metal-detecting. [4].
2 Late Iron Age gold coins of Roman issue (aurei of Augustus). These coins are the third addendum to the coin hoard recovered in August-September 2017, which now puts the total for the hoard at 11 coins.
One of these coins is earlier than the other recovered to date, having been minted in the years immediately following his victory over Marcus Antonius at Actium in 31 BC.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were submitted for consideration as Treasure (Ref: 2021 T731).
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2024.
