Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from Portland stone in the form of a freestanding, budded cross head with shield at centre. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It was erected to commemorate twenty-seven servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single man who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Churchyard of All Saints' Church, Norwich Road, Shouldham.
Type: Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding, budded cross head with shield at centre. It is used to commemorate twenty-seven servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single man who died in World War Two. It is described as “atop a tall, slender, octagonal shaft with gable-moulded collar and moulded foot, which stands on a square plinth and two-tiered octagonal stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions. The World War One dedication and twenty-seven associated names (Inscription A) is to the plinth. The latter World War Two dates and the single associated name (Inscription B) is to the uppermost step of the base (S4).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
