Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate eight local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Lane, Shouldham Thorpe.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eight local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a plinth with single-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions. The former World War One dedication is in leaded lettering to a smoothed face of the plinth, along with eight associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication is above the former, on a bronze plaque at the base of the column, along with three associated names (Inscription B; additional details identified from S4).
