Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from Portland stone in the form of a freestanding obelisk. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate nine local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Peter, Hall Road, Smallburgh.
Type: Obelisk
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. It is used to commemorate nice local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described “with moulded foot on a slightly tapering four-sided plinth with deep foot that has a sloped cap, on a square base and concrete foundation” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the west face, with nine associated names divided across the side faces. The latter World War Two dates are to the east face, along with two associated names (Inscription B; position of inscriptions identified from S4 photographs).

Inscription A: THIS MEMORIAL/ IS ERECTED TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ FOR GOD KING AND COUNTRY/ "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS."
