Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite, combined with flint for a later base extension. It takes the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920, and the insertion of an additional base is likely post World War Two. It is used to commemorate twenty-six local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly six men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Village Green, Junction of Bluestone Road and B1355, South Creake.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, combined with flint for a later base extension. It takes the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-six local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly six men who died in World War Two. It is described as approximately 2.5m tall “on a plinth with single-stepped base”, and “enclosed by four low granite posts connected by metal bars” (S1). The original plinth has been elevated to allow the insertion of an additional base, and there are inscriptions in leaded lettering on both. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the earlier plinth, with twenty-six associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication is below, to the front face of the additional base, along with six associated names (Inscription B).
