Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Churchyard of the Church of St James, Clipped Hedge Lane, Southrepps.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Clipsham stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-three local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The cross is described as having a tapering shaft, a “Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief” to the front, and a pyramidal cap. This is situated on a two-tiered plinth. The upper tier is described with “a slightly sloping cap and chamfered corners”, and the lower tier, deeper with “a moulded rim, and chamfered corners where flint is inserted in vertical strips” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth carved in relief. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) starts to the front face of the upper tier, with twenty-three associated names on the faces of the lower tier. These names are followed by the end of the dedication (Inscription B) on the front face of the lower tier. The latter World War Two dates are to the top tier, along with three associated names (Inscription C; the position of inscriptions identified from S5 and S6). The whole is on a two-stepped base with “flint inserted in horizontal strips” (S1).
