Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross approximately 3m tall. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate seventeen who died in World War One, and latterly two who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Town Square, High Street, Stoke Ferry.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross approximately 3m tall. It is used to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly [two] men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a tapering plinth with a two-stepped stone base with four low stone bollards at each corner of the wide lower step” (S1). There are inscriptions on marble plaques in incised, blacked lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the bottom of the cross shaft, with seventeen associated names to the front face of the plinth below. The latter World War Two dedication, and three associated names (Inscription B), are further down on the same plinth plaque (the position of inscriptions identified from S4).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: IN/ HONOURED/ MEMORY OF/ OUR GALLANT/ FALLEN FROM/ THIS VILLAGE/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918.
Inscription B: (17 Names)/ WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (2 NAMES).
