Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from granite in the form of a freestanding, rock-faced, Celtic wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate fifteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four local servicemen who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in April 2018.

Location: St Peter's Churchyard, Norwich Road, Strumpshaw.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from granite, in the form of a freestanding, rock-faced, Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate fifteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four local servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described as “embellished with a relief carving of the Sword of Sacrifice on its principal north face”. On a “trapezoidal plinth which is located on a single-step stone base” (S1). A tablet, also of granite, is sited upright against the plinth at the bottom of the memorial (S4). There are inscriptions in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the north face of the plinth, on a dressed surface, with fifteen associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dates are to the tablet, along with four associated names (Inscription B).
