Summary

World War One memorial constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Margaret, Suffield Common, Suffield.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One. It has been described as “on a plinth with two-stepped base” (S1). There is an inscription, including names with regimental details (S4 photographs), on the plinth in leaded lettering.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM SUFFIELD WHO FELL DURING/ THE GREAT WAR, A.D. 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.
