Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. This memorial was erected in 1919 to commemorate six residents of Swanton Abbott who died in World War One, and latterly two residents who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in April 2018.

Location: Churchyard of Church of St Michael, Church Lane, Swanton Abbott.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate six residents of Swanton Abbott who died in World War One, and latterly two residents who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a slender tapered shaft surmounting a two-tiered plinth and square base” (S1). There is an inscription in leaded lettering to the cross (Inscription A); with all further inscriptions incised, and blacked (S5). The former World War One dedication (Inscription B) is to face of the plinth’s upper-tier, with six associated names to the face of cross shaft above. Below these six names, the latter World War Two dates are inscribed at the bottom of cross shaft, along with the additional two names (Inscription B).
