Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. This memorial was unveiled on 23 July 1920 to commemorate thirteen local servicemen (including one later addition) who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in March 2018.

Location: All Saints Churchyard, Mill Street, Swanton Morley.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate thirteen local servicemen (including one later addition) who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a tapering plinth with moulded cap, on a single-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the front face, the twelve associated names, with ranks, are to the right face; below lies the single additional name to the stepped base. The latter World War Two dates are to the left face, preceded by the four associated names (Inscription B; the position of inscriptions identified from S4).

Inscription A: IN HONOUR OF CHRIST CRUCIFIED/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.
