Summary

World War One memorial, with World War Two and Falklands Conflict additions. Constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross approximately 2.5m tall. This memorial was unveiled 02 October 1921 to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One, a single casualty from World War Two, and latterly a single casualty from the Falklands Conflict. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: The churchyard, St Mary's Church, The Street, Syderstone.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross approximately 2.5m tall. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One, a single casualty from World War Two, and latterly a single casualty from the Falklands Conflict. It is described “with a sword of sacrifice carved in relief on the front face”, standing “on a low tapering plinth with a single-stepped base and a cobbled foundation” (S1). To the front of the memorial a tablet, also of granite, was added to the stepped base. There are inscriptions in metal lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the plinth, with twelve associated names (Inscription A). A World War Two dedication is to the front riser of the stepped base, with a single name (Inscription B). The latter Falklands Conflict is dedicated on the tablet, along with a single name (Inscription C).

Inscription A: 1914 – 1918./ TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ (12 NAMES)/ "MAY THEY REST IN PEACE."/ "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE".
Inscription B: 1939 - 1945 (NAME)/ ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WENT OUT FROM THE PARISH/ TO SERVE IN THIS WAR RETURNED SAFELY/ THANKS BE TO GOD.
Inscription C: 1982 FALKLAND ISLANDS/ (NAME).
