Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Latin cross 1.8m tall. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Edmund, Taverham Lane, Taverham.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, Latin cross 1.8m tall. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a plinth with a single-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised, blacked lettering. The former World War One dedication starts on the cross bar (Inscription A) and continues to the plinth face with seven associated names (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dates are to the riser of the stepped base, along with four associated names (Inscription C).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD.
Inscription B: IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES).
Inscription C: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
