Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was unveiled 30 November 1919 to commemorate forty local servicemen who died in World War One. In 1948 an additional granite ‘book’ with bronze panels was unveiled, which is used to commemorate an additional forty-nine who died in World War Two. The enclosure around the memorial was probably added at the same time as the ‘book’. The memorial was Listed Grade II in June 2018. Sometime in 2013 landscaping was done to provide wheelchair access.

Location: River Green, Yarmouth Road, Thorpe St Andrew.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate forty local servicemen who died in World War One. It is described as “decorative… on a slightly tapering shaft, on a four-sided tapering plinth with single-stepped base”. The memorial also has an additional “two [cast] bronze panels affixed to a granite open ‘book’ set into the ground at the foot of the memorial” (S1). Which is used to commemorate an additional forty-nine who died in World War Two. The enclosure around the memorial was probably added at the same time as the ‘book’. There are also inscriptions on the cross plinth in incised, painted lettering (S4); and cast as part of the bronze panels. The former World War One dedication is to the front of the plinth, with forty associated names to the side faces segregated by year (Inscription A). The latter forty-nine names associated with World War Two are also segregated by date on the bronze panels (Inscription B; S4 photographs). Sometime in 2013 landscaping was done to provide wheelchair access.
