Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was dedicated in 1920 to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Churchyard of St Edmund's Church, Church Road, Thurne.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a plinth with two-stepped base” (S1). An additional granite slab is fixed to the top step, and there are inscriptions in incised, painted lettering (S4, photographs). The former World War One dedication is to the face of the plinth, with seven associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dates are to the face of the granite slab, along with three associated names (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Dedicated by the Dean of Norwich in 1920.
Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THESE/ PARISHES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES).
Inscription B: 1939 – 45/ (NAMES).
