Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate nine local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Margaret, Pound Lane, Toft Monks.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate nine local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a tapering four-sided plinth with single-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the ‘front’ face, with nine associated names to the side faces. The latter World War Two dedication is to the ‘rear’ face, along with three associated names (Inscription B; the position of inscriptions identified from S4).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: TO/ THOSE WHO DIED/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918.
Inscription B: LEST WE FORGET/ 1939 – 45/ THESE WERE THEY/ WHO STROVE TO SET THE NATIONS FREE/ NOT ONLY FROM THE SWORD’S BRUTE SWAY/ BUT FROM THE SPIRIT’S SLAVERY/ (3 NAMES).
