Within the Records of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich Cathedral Estate, the 1486-1487 field book for Hindringham describes this location as the site of the manors of Burghall and Nowers. The text is translated by [1] as:
"Lord [Thomas] Asteley holds 2 closes lying together called the site [Scitus] of the Manors of Burghall & Nowers, lying next to the common way leading through middle street on the East & tenements of William Mower & Roger Hawne on the West & butting on the common way & on the common watercourse towards Nort...". See Documentary Source (S1).
[1] notes that the use of the latin scitus indicates this was the site of the manor house and associated buildings. The closes themselves would be clearly demarcated by physical boundaries. The external outline of the connected closes are therefore likely preserved in modern field boundaries, however, the exact location of the internal division between the two is not known. [1] does add that abuttals of various surrounding plots suggest that the site of the manor of Nowers lies to the west of the site of the manor of Burghall. See unpublished document (S2).
Also see Blomefield (S3) for further information about the Manor of Nowers [2] and Enclosure Maps (S4), (S5), and (S6).
Late Saxon and medieval pottery and metalwork have also been recovered from this site (NHER 25997).
