Full Description
August 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A group of boundary banks/ditches and blocks of possible ridge and furrow, all of unknown but possible post medieval date, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1) and visualised lidar data (S2). They are located on what was formerly part of Cranwich Heath, and form part of a wider group of similar features visible in the surrounding area. Some of the boundaries correspond to or mirror the alignment of field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3), and it is likely that the majority (if not all) are of post medieval date. They perhaps relate to short-lived cultivation of the heathland. The alignment of the features is at odds with other boundaries and ridges visible to their west (NHER 63252), and one block of ridges appears to overlap with boundaries relating to Lynford Park to the east NHER 63350. The nature of these relationships, however, is uncertain. As the lidar was flown relatively recently, it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
