Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2018 revealed a number of ditches, although unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. The alignments of these features are however at odds with the known post-medieval and modern boundaries, suggesting that they are probably associated with an earlier phase of land division.

Map

July 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The southernmost of the two trenches excavated revealed a pair of parallel, north-east to south-west aligned ditches. The adjacent trench revealed a similarly-aligned ditch that was probably a continuation of one of the features to the south, and a shallower, perpendicular ditch. Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered, although the alignment of these ditches is markedly different from the boundaries shown on the available 19th-century maps, suggesting they are potentially features of some antiquity. The lack of finds does though suggest that these features are unlikely to have lain close to any contemporary settlement focus.
An undisturbed subsoil deposit was present in both trenches.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
