Full Description
August 2016-March 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of front and rear extensions to The Post Office.
The initial ground reduction exposed no archaeologically-significant remains and several test pits excavated in planned pile locations also revealed no notable deposits. Although an 18th-cenutry gravestone was exposed during work on the rear extension this had clearly been displaced from elsewhere - laying on top of a heap of stones and 19th-century bricks that appeared to have been placed to support an iron drain. There was therefore no evidence to suggest that the adjacent churchyard had ever extended to the west of its present boundary.
A number of finds were recovered from topsoil deposits during the excavation of the test pits, including medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds, clay tobacco pipe fragments and a small assemblage of butchered animal bones.
See report (S1) for further details.
