Full Description
June-July 2015. Watching Brief and Excavation.
Archaeological work undertaken during widening of access to Abbey Cottage and construction of small extension.
In order to widen the access to the property a section of roadside bank was removed along the line of the boundary wall to Castle Acre Priory (NHER 4096). This work exposed corresponding east-to-west aligned wall foundations composed of medium sized flint nodules in lime mortar. A profile of an upstanding section of the wall was also exposed and recorded.
The archaeological excavation of the extension footprint and its associated footing trenches revealed no significant features or deposits. Four medieval pottery sherds recovered from subsoil deposits were the only finds found during this work.
See report (S1) for further details.
