Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2015 exposed a number of ditches and several pits, the majority appear to have been post-medieval in date. Although there was artefactual evidence for earlier phases of activity this material was present in only very small quantities. The finds include several prehistoric worked flints and single sherds of?Iron Age, Early Saxon and medieval pottery.

Map

June 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The seven trenches excavated revealed a number of ditches and several pits. Although dating evidence was fairly limited it appears that the majority of these features were probably associated with post-medieval activity. There was some artefactual evidence for earlier activity but this material was present in only very small quantities and in several cases clearly residual within later features. These earlier finds included undiagnostic prehistoric flint flakes, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint end scraper, single sherds of probable Iron Age, Early Saxon and medieval pottery and two medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds.
The probable post-medieval remains were dated by the presence of small amount of post-medieval pottery, clay tobacco pipe stems, bottle glass and several iron objects. These features included several of the ditches (one of which also corresponds with a boundary depicted on 19th-century maps) and one of the pits. The alignments of at least two of the undated ditches suggest that they were also probably associated with this phase of activity.
Archaeological remains were densest in a trench in the western half of the site where at least seven ditches were exposed as well as two discrete features. A number of these features produced no post-medieval material and were therefore potentially associated with earlier phases of activity (including ditches that produced single sherds of Early Saxon and medieval pottery).
