Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2019 revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains. Although a probable ditch and several pits were identified these were all fairly unremarkable features thought to be of relatively recent date. No finds were recovered during this work.

Map

July 2017 and January 2019. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological and heritage assessment of proposed development site that also incorporates the modern mill buildings to the east of these fields.
It is argued that as the proposed development will see the removal of the mill buildings it would represent an enhancement of the setting of the listed buildings that lie immediately to the east.
No features of note were observed when the site was visited in July 2017.
See report (S1) for further details.

January 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of western part of proposed development site.
The nine trenches excavated revealed a number of features, all of which were thought to be of relatively recent date, although no actual dating evidence was recovered.
One of these features was a probable north-to-south aligned ditch, whilst the others were most likely pits of some kind. All contained homogenous, unremarkable single fills. It was noted that the cuts for at least two of the pits were visible high in the subsoil, suggesting they were probably not of great age.
Although a number of other possible linear features were exposed these were investigated and deemed to be of natural origin.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
