Full Description
February 2016. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
The site was adjudged to have a moderate potential for the survival of below-ground archaeological remains. See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 August 2020.
May 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The five trenches excavated at this site revealed only a small number of potentially archaeologically-significant features. These included two north-east to south-west aligned ditches that were potentially associated with the same boundary and a small possible pit, none of which produced any dating evidence. The one other feature exposed was a large probable quarry pit from which a single post-medieval tile was recovered.
Although pottery sherds and brick and tile fragments were noted in the upcaste spoil from the trenches this material was all of late post-medieval date and therefore not retained. The small number of metal objects recovered were also exclusively post-medieval or later date, including a coin, copper alloy buttons and a strap junction. The absence of earlier material is notable, particularly as medieval sherds had previously been recovered at this location (NHER 19001).
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.240).
