NHER 732 (Monument record) - Late Saxon to post medieval occupation and industry, opposite Nos 17 to 27 Fishergate

1 April to 7 June 1985. Excavation by NAU.
Wicker fence probably of 10th century date.
Finds from 8th century were recovered including two brooches, girdle hanger.
9th century French imported pottery and Ipswich ware.
Barrel well perhaps 11th century.
Late medieval (?14th century) wall.

A wooden pier at the south-west corner of the site, once used for tipping domestic rubbish into wherries, was preserved with a Norfolk Heritage plaque but was dismantled in November 1999 (for restoration?).
