Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone in the form of a freestanding obelisk. This memorial was erected to commemorate seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 15m south of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, The churchyard, off Station Road, Wendling.
Type: Obelisk
Description:
The memorial is approximately 3m tall, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. It is used to commemorate seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “square on plan, standing on a corniced plinth. The plinth has a moulded foot and base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering, painted black. The former World War One dedication is to the front face, with seven associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication is to the south face, along with three associated names including rank (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ (7 NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918./ ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS.
Inscription B: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ (3 NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR OF/ 1939 - 1945.
