Summary

A geophysical survey of this field undertaken in two phases between 2010 and 2019 identified few anomalies of obvious archaeological significance. Although a number of linear anomalies were recorded the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. Several notable exceptions at the western edge of the site do however appear to be unrelated to the late post-medieval field system and may therefore represent infilled ditches of greater antiquity.

Map

September-October 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area (Field 2).
This survey revealed no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance.
Although a number of linear anomalies were detected the majority clearly coincide with former field boundaries depicted on the Wymondham tithe map of 1839 (S1). The one exception was also clearly associated with this late post-medieval field system. Interestingly, the entirety of a small former field immediately to the south-west of Lower Grove Farm exhibits a highly magnetic character that is markedly different to the adjacent land. Similar magnetic noise is seen immediately to the south of the farm buildings.
Although a number of more discrete anomalies were identified none are thought to be of archaeological interest. Two correspond with former ponds depicted on early Ordnance Survey maps, such as (S2).
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).

September-October 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of areas at western and southern margins of field that were not examined as part of the 2010 survey (Area 1-2 and 5).
A number of linear anomalies were identified, including several that clearly correspond with boundaries on the Wymondham tithe map (S1). There is however also a number at the western edge of the field that do not appear to be associated with the late post-medieval field system and may therefore represent infilled ditches of greater antiquity. Of particular interest are two adjoining perpendicular anomalies in the south-western corner of the field that could represent the corner of a field or enclosure.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
