Summary

Geophysical surveys of this field in 2010 and 2019 identified four linear anomalies likely to represent former field boundaries. Three correspond with boundaries depicted on a tithe map of 1839 and the forth was probably also associated with the late post-medieval field system.

Map

September-October 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area (Field 8).
This survey revealed little of archaeological interest.
Two adjacent perpendicular linear anomalies at the western end of the field correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Wymondham tithe map of 1839 (S1). The line of one of these boundaries is continued to the east by a third, weaker linear anomaly that most likely represents another field boundary of post-medieval date (albeit one that had already been removed by 1839).
A series of other linear anomalies are likely to represent modern land drains.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
P. Watkins (HES), 11 February 2021.

February-March 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of entire field, including block examined in 2010 (Area 7).
This survey appears to have had slightly better results, identifying a number of linear anomalies that had not been recorded in 2010. The majority of these are however likely to represent drainage features, the one exception being a north-to-south aligned anomaly that corresponds with another former field boundary shown on the Wymondham tithe map (S1).
The only other response of possible interest was a discrete anomaly of undetermined origin at the western edge of the field.
See report (S4) for further details.
