Summary

Despite its proximity to a known Roman road (NHER 19725) work at this site has revealed little of archaeological interest. Although an initial geophysical survey in 2010 identified a number of linear anomalies these all corresponded with former field boundaries depicted on a tithe map of 1839. Subsequent trial trenching revealed only two ditches and two unremarkable pits; none of which produced any dating evidence. There was nothing to suggest these remains were of any great antiquity.

Map

September-October 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area (Field 16).
No anomalies of particular archaeological interest were identified.
Although a number of east-to-west and north-to-south positive anomalies were detected these all correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Wymondham tithe map of 1839 (S1).
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).

August 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The eighteen trenches excavated revealed two ditches and two pits, none of which produced any dating evidence.
Both of the ditches appear to have been parallel to former boundaries shown on the Wymondham tithe map of 1839 (S1). Three of these boundaries correspond with north-to-south and east-to-west aligned ‘modern ditches’ recorded in a number of the trenches. One produced fragments of modern glass, pottery and ceramic drain pipe.
The two pits were both small, unremarkable features with sterile fills.
See report (S4) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.603).
