Full Description
October-November 2016. Excavation.
Excavation of single trench through footprint of proposed residential development.
The principal aim of this work was to look for surviving remains associated with the Roman road that appears to have passed through this site (NHER 19725).
Two broad areas of very compact grey brown silty sand at the northern end of the trench are thought to have represented surviving traces of the Roman road. No finds were recovered from this material and there was no evidence for any associated features. It is however noted that there was considerable evidence for recent disturbance, with the probable road deposits overlain by a topsoil deposit that contained large amounts of modern refuse.
Remains identified in the southern half of the site included three roughly parallel north-west to south-east aligned linear features. These produced no dating evidence but their orientation suggests that they were most likely associated with a former plot boundary and unlikely to be of great antiquity.
See report (S1) for further details.
