Summary

World War One memorial approximately 3.3m tall, constructed from stone in the form of a freestanding cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate ten members of the local community who died in World War One. The memorial underwent centenary conservation works in 2014 and was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 40m west of All Saints' Church, Church Street, Weston Longville.
Type: Cross
Description:
The memorial is approximately 3.3m tall, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross. It is used to commemorate ten members of the local community who died in World War One. It has been described as “on a slender, tapering octagonal shaft with moulded collar and foot, standing on a small pedestal. The pedestal, square on plan, stand on a three-stepped base. The cross-head, rising from the simply moulded collar, is in the form of an equal-armed cross pommé with cusps at the intersections of the arms.” (S1). There is an inscription on the front face of the pedestal in incised lettering (S4), with the associated names including date of death and service inscribed on the other faces.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: TO HONOUR THE MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF WESTON/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ LEST WE FORGET.
