Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: St Germans Churchyard, Lynn Road, Wiggenhall St Germans.
Type: Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, polished, plain cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-one local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a tall shaft, tapering plinth with moulded cap, and two-stepped base” set within a kerbed enclosure (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication starts to the south face of the plinth (Inscription A) and continues to the east face of the plinth along with twenty-one associated names (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dedication is to the upper tier of the base on the east face (S4), along with four associated names (Inscription C).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919.
Inscription B: TO THE MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN / (NAMES) / “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS / FRIENDS” / ST JOHN IV.13.
Inscription C: 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES).
