Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2015 recorded little of archaeological interest. Although a probable medieval moat (NHER 55846) is thought to have extended into the north-western part of the site no associated remains were encountered. There was however evidence for significant recent disturbance in this area. A pit of post-medieval/modern date was the only feature recorded.

Map

November 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Although the north-western part of the site coincides with the northern section of a probable medieval moat visible on (S1) a trench excavated at this location revealed no associated remains. There was though evidence for considerable recent disturbance, with a buried topsoil deposit lying above the natural clay, overlain by a made ground deposit of silt, cinder and crushed ceramic building material. This latter deposit was cut by a large amorphous pit containing pottery of 19th- to 20th-century date, ceramic building material and glass. The fill of this pit was overlain by further levelling deposits.
The five trenches excavated in the main part of the site to the south-east also revealed no archaeologically-significant features. Here there was no evidence for post-medieval or modern disturbance, with an intact subsoil deposit recorded in all of the trenches.
See report (S2) for further details.
