Summary

World War One memorial constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was unveiled October 1920 to commemorate three members of the local community who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 13m north-west of St Margaret's Church, The churchyard, Witton Lane, Witton, Postwick with Witton.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate three members of the local community who died in World War One. It has been described “with a sword of sacrifice carved on the front face”, situated “on a tapering pedestal with single-stepped base below” (S1). There are inscriptions to the front face of the cross shaft (Inscription A) and pedestal (Inscription B) in applied metal lettering.

Inscription A: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN HONOURED/ MEMORY OF.
Inscription B: THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918./ (3 NAMES)/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.
