Summary

World War One memorial, with World War Two and Korean War additions. Constructed from a polished grey granite in the form of a freestanding pillar. Proposed in May 1919, this memorial was erected in 1921 to commemorate twenty-three members of the local community who died in World War One, four men who died in World War Two, and latterly a single casualty from the Korean War. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: Approximately 100m to the west of the Manor House, Station Road, Great Ryburgh, Ryburgh.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from a polished grey granite in the form of a freestanding pillar. It is used to commemorate twenty-three members of the local community who died in World War One, four men who died in World War Two, and latterly a single casualty from the Korean War. It is described as “surmounted by a moulded cap and small finial, standing on a two-stage plinth… The moulded cap is decorated with incised foliate motifs, whilst there are incised cable and diamond patterns in bands around the top and bottom of the pillar shaft. The faces of the upper stage of the plinth are outlined in incised lines” and below the plinth is a two-tier base constructed from other materials (S1). There are inscriptions in leaded lettering (S4). The principal dedication starts to the front face of the pillar (Inscription A), with twenty-three names associated with World War Two to the sides and upper stage of plinth. The World War Two names are to the front faces of the plinth stages. The later dedication for the Korean War is to the east face of the upper plinth stage, along with the single associated name (Inscription B). The memorial is sited within a semi-circular enclosure bounded “by a coped flint cobble and red brick wall to the rear, with, to the front, railings carried on a low brick wall and a centrally-positioned gate. The curved rear wall ends at the pavement side in broad red brick piers with shallow pyramidal stone caps” (S1).
