World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Roadside Enclosure, Lynn Road, B1440 (near junction with Hall Road), Snettisham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate forty-four local servicemen who died in World War One, and fifteen men who died in World War Two. It is described as “atop a wide, tapering shaft, beneath which is a tall plinth with deeply corniced upper section and moulded foot. Beneath this is a three-tiered base of [Snettisham] carrstone blocks and brick. The whole is enclosed by metal railings” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering to the plinth. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the front, with twenty-one associated names to the remaining three faces. The latter World War Two dates (Inscription B) are to the moulded foot at the front, along with fifteen associated names to the remaining three faces (S4).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

2014. Restoration.
The memorial underwent centenary restoration works, with the dedications replaced in Nabrizina marble panels, a replacement lowerstep, and the enclosure repaved. A further name was hand engraved for a man who is believed to have died in World War One but was originally omitted.

Unveiled: Re-dedicated by the Rt Revd J. Meyrick in July 2014.
