Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding cross pattée, with flint tiles and a bronze plaque. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate twenty-three local servicemen who died in World War One, three of which died after the war from injuries sustained. Latterly seven men were added who died in World War Two, including one who also died after the war from his injuries. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Junction of Church Lane and Church Hill (A143), Haddiscoe.
Type: Cross Pattee
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding cross pattée, with flint tiles and a bronze plaque. It is used to commemorate twenty-three local servicemen who died in World War One, three of which died after the war from injuries sustained. Latterly seven men were added who died in World War Two, including one who also died after the war from his injuries. It is described “with a slightly tapering four-sided shaft, which rises from a two-stepped base. The east face of the cross-head has small, square flint tiles inserted into each arm and arranged in a circular pattern at the centre. Similar tiles are inserted in a geometric pattern down the east and west faces of the shaft. The whole stands on a stone slab foundation” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering to the base. The former World War One dedication is to the east face of the lower step (Inscription A), along with three names to west face, and twenty names on all four faces of the upper step. The latter World War Two dedication is to an oval cast bronze plaque on the north face of the lower step, along with all seven associated names (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

Inscription B: 1939/ (6 NAMES)/ & LATER FROM INJURIES/ (1 NAME)/1945.
