Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from Portland stone in the form of a freestanding cross patée. Designed by A. Pells and approved in 1920. This memorial was erected in 1921 by H. A. King to commemorate fourteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 20m to the south-west of St Andrew's Church, The churchyard, Raveningham Hall, Beccles Road, Raveningham.
Type: Cross Pattee
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding cross patée. It is used to commemorate fourteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. It is described as “octagonal in section, with a moulded foot. The cross shaft stands on tapering plinth, octagonal on plan. The plinth stands on a three-stepped, octagonal, base” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering (S4). The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) starts to the front face of the plinth, with fourteen associated names on the remaining faces, along with further dedicatory text (Inscription B), and a latter World War Two dedication with the single associated name (Inscription C). Further inscriptions in are contiguous across the faces of the upper step (Inscription D) and middle step (Inscription E) of the base.

Designed by: A drawing of the memorial is dated July 1920 designed by A. Pells, FSI, architect and Chartered Surveyor of Beccles. The design was approved 04 August 1920.

Inscription B: THIS CROSS/ IS SET UP IN/ GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THOSE WHO/ PRESERVED OUR/ HOMES IN TIME/ OF DANGER.
Inscription C: AND OF THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (NAME).
Inscription D: THEIR NAME/ LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE.
Inscription E: TO THE ARMS OF/ THY LOVE WE/ COMMIT THEM.
