Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2018 identified a single undated pit, close to where cropmarks thought to represent a series of other pits had previously been recorded (NHER 52048). There was however no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the cropmark features themselves. Across much of the of the site natural sands and gravels lay beneath what appeared to be particularly thick colluvial deposits.

March 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
This study concluded that the site has a moderate potential to contain archaeological remains of prehistoric, Roman or Saxon date. It was likely to have remained in agricultural use from at least the later medieval period onwards.
No features of archaeological or historical interest were noted during a brief site visit undertaken in October 2017.
See report (S1) for further details.

November-December 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The twelve trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only a single undated pit identified. This feature was recorded in the south-east corner of the site, very close to where a number of cropmarks likely to represent pits had previously been recorded (NHER 52048). There was however no trace of any sub-surface remains associated with the three cropmarks that actually intersected with the trench excavated at this location.
In the majority of the other trenches thick colluvial deposits were found to lie beneath the subsoil. A combination of machine-excavated test pits and hand augering demonstrated that these colluvial layers were up to 2.00m deep.
Three unstratified prehistoric flint cores were the only finds recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 March 2021.
