Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate eighteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three local servicemen who died in War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Approximately 30m north-east of Wimbotsham and Stow Community School, The green, Church Road, Wimbotsham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eighteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three local servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described “with a sword of sacrifice carved in relief on its face, standing on a tapering plinth with single-stepped base”, the whole enclosed by a small metal railed fence (S1). There are inscriptions in applied metal lettering. The cross shaft bears the former World War One dedication to the front face (Inscription A), with the eighteen associated names to the front face of the plinth in two columns. The latter World War Two dates and three associated names (Inscription B) are to the step beneath.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
