Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from limestone in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate eleven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly five men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 15m south-west of All Saints Church, The churchyard, Church Road, Wreningham.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate eleven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly five men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a collared cross shaft, octagonal in section. The shaft rises from a two-stage plinth, square on plan, that stands on a large base”. The upper stage is shouldered and “the lower stage of the plinth is formed of limestone ashlar, with knapped facing flints visible on three sides. The base is formed of flint cobbles with a stone cap” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised, painted black lettering (S5). The former World War One dedication is to the front face of the upper stage of the plinth (Inscription A), with eleven associated names to the other faces. The latter World War Two dates are to the front face of the lower stage of the plinth along with five associated names (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

Inscription B: 1939 1945/ (NAMES).
