World War One Memorial, with World War Two and Korean War Additions
Location: Junction of Queen's Road with Exchange Street, Attleborough.
Type: Cross Bottonnée
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Doulton stone, in the form of a freestanding cross bottonée. It is used to commemorate one hundred and one members of the local community who died in World War One, twenty-four men who died in World War Two, and latterly a single casualty from the Korean War. It is described “above a decorative moulded collar around an octagonal shaft.” Which “rises from an octagonal pedestal with paired lancet niches to each face carved with gothic tracery. The pedestal surmounts an octagonal plinth with moulded cap and foot; later stone plaques are affixed to each face. The whole stands on a four-stepped, octagonal base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plaques in incised, painted black lettering. The principal dedication is to the east face (Inscription A), with one hundred and one names associated with World War Two recorded to the north-east, north, north-west, west, south-west, and south faces; each preceded by the dates, 1914-1918. The twenty-four names associated with World War Two are contiguously recorded to the south, and south-east faces; each preceded by the dates, 1939-1945. The latter single name associated with the Korean War is also recorded to the south-east face (Inscription B).
