Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from brick, in the form of a gabled shrine containing a marble plaque. This memorial was erected to commemorate thirteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. An additional Roll of Honour made by F. Osborne and Co. Ltd in the from a of a bronze plaque is located to a rear alcove. The Roll of Honour further commemorates all ninety local servicemen who served in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: Approximately 21m to the west of the south porch of St Mary's Church, The Churchyard, Church of St Mary, Burnham Deepdale, Brancaster.
Type: Shrine
Description:
The memorial is constructed from brick, in the form of a gabled shrine. It is used to commemorate thirteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described constructed against the churchyard wall, with a plain Gothic arch entrance facing the churchyard, “whilst to the rear the upper part of the back wall forms a blind arched alcove” (S1). Inside the shrine is a squared headed white marble plaque, with a moulded foot. Which “is set against the rear wall, with a Calvary above” (S1). There are inscriptions to the marble plaque in leaded lettering (S5), the former World War One dedication with the thirteen associated names, and the latter World War Two dedication with three associated names (Inscription A). An additional Roll of Honour for all ninety local servicemen who served in World War One is located to the rear alcove. Within the alcove is a timber frame with a bronze plaque. The frame is described with the upper member forming a shelf, with a small standing stepped cross upon it and Iron lamp-supports to either side. The bronze plaque is inscribed along with the ninety associated names “indicating those who were wounded, and those who died” (Inscription B; S1). The small stepped cross also has a small inscription (Inscription C).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: IN HONOUR/ AND LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM/ DEEPDALE & STAITHE,/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR./ (13 NAMES)/ 1939 - 1945/ “REST ETERNAL GRANT TO THEM O LORD”/ (3 NAMES).
Inscription B: ROLL OF HONOUR OF THE MEN FROM DEEPDALE AND STAITHE/ WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ (90 NAMES).
Inscription C: IN HOC VINCES.
