Full Description
January-May 2010. Geophysical survey.
Magnetometer survey of entire field (Area 14).
No anomalies of obvious archaeological significance were identified.
The area was dominated by 'patterned ground' geological anomalies. A small number of scattered discrete ferrous anomalies were most likely caused by modern debris in the topsoil.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).

December 2014-January 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area (Field 14; Trenches 1-20).
The twenty trenches excavated in this field revealed a single ditch and three pits, all of which lay in the north-east part of the field.
The ditch was recorded in two trenches and aligned north-east to south-west, possibly indicating a relationship with the similarly-aligned fragmentary cropmarks recorded to the east (NHER 53454). It produced two sherds of Iron Age pottery and a small amount of animal bone. Two samples from its fills produced only sparse charred plant macrofossils likely to represent scattered refuse or midden waste.
The pits all had dark, presumably charcoal-rich fills but were of uncertain date. One produced a small number of potentially Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age worked flints but another appeared to cut the fill of the ditch.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single prehistoric flint flake and a post-medieval roof tile.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 26 March 2021. Amended 18 January 2024.
