Summary

A geophysical survey of this field undertaken in 2014 revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. Subsequent trial trenching in 2014/2015 also had largely negative results, revealing only scattered discrete features of probable natural origin. One feature produced a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery but this was almost certainly residual.

Map

November 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 12).
No anomalies of obvious archaeological significance were identified.
The field was dominated by 'patterned ground' geological anomalies. Scattered discrete ferrous anomalies were most likely caused by modern debris in the topsoil.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.

December 2014-January 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area (Field 12; Trenches 47-65).
Although the 19 trenches excavated in this field revealed a number of discrete features the majority were thought to be of natural origin - most likely representing disturbance from tree roots (this area was previously known as Jane's Wood and had been covered by vegetation until relatively recently).
One feature produced a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery but this was probably residual, particularly as a sample from the same deposit produced an assemblage entirely composed of de-watered plant materials and terrestrial molluscs.
No unstratified finds recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 26 March 2021. Amended 18 January 2024.
